本名孟俊良，1961年生於上海吳淞，1978-1982年就讀於上海機械學院（現名上海理工大學）。讀大學期間開始文學創作並投身非官方的地下文學運動，先後參與創辦和主持編輯《海上》、《大陸》、《北回歸線》、《現代漢詩》等多種詩歌民刊。1995年離開中國，應美國布朗大學之邀任駐校作家（1995-1998），也曾任《傾向》文學人文雜誌執行主編（1995-2000）。2001年參與發起成立中國獨立作家筆會（現名獨立中文筆會），任自由寫作委員會首屆召集人。2008年至2012年曾任晨鐘書局總編輯；2010年創辦溯源書社與海浪文化有限公司，出版多種政論書籍。
